Martín Beitia · Building in the open

Built here,
in plain sight.

At Albaola, in Pasaia, they are rebuilding the San Juan, a 16th-century Basque whaling ship, with the techniques of the time, while visitors walk around the hull and watch it grow frame by frame. Ontziola works the same way: the projects I design and build are out in the open, even the ones that are still just a keel.

The logbook

What has happened at Ontziola, with dates.

“I don't build to own ships. I build to understand how they're made, and to show others it can be done.”

Why I build

What brings me to Ontziola once the office lights go off.

I

To experiment

Here I try things with no deck and no committee. If something doesn't work, I take it apart and start again. What I care about is the process, not being right.

II

Because now I can

I've always wanted to make things, but I was held back by not having the tools or the technical know-how. That has changed. Today I can take an idea from the notebook to something that works, and put my creativity into what really matters to me.

III

To find the limits

I want to know how far AI can go and where it breaks. I build to understand and to explore, and so that those of us who work with it keep getting better at it.

Like in a trainera, the Basque rowing boat, nobody moves forward alone here: every build has its crew, human and AI, and progress is won stroke by stroke, all together.
